Education 198: Strategies for Success at Cal for Transfer Students

The goal of this course is to assist transfer students in making an effective transition to university life. It will introduce you to the numerous resources on campus and help you hone your academic skills. Classroom discussions and exercises emphasize collaborative learning and focus on study strategy topics such as managing time and procrastination, reading and learning actively, writing and communicating effectively, and improving test preparation and performance. Gues speakers will present information on resources, services, and opportunities.
Enrollment is limited to 25 students per section

Education 198: Adult Learners in Higher Education

This course addresses specific issues relevant to re-entry (25 and older) adult learners during the transitional first semester at Cal. Course discussions and assignments are designed to refine study skills such as managing the heavy reading load, refining writing skils to Berkeley standards, and balancing academics with personal and work environments. Due to its adult learning emphasis, this class affords the opportunity to connect with other re-entry learners who deal with concerns that are often different from traditional-age students. In addition to weekly meetings, there are workshops and other opportunities in our TRSP Center to work on skills, to network and build community. Many re-entry students have said that this course was essential to their success at Cal.

Education 98/198: It Takes a Village: Building Support Systems for Student Parents

This two-unit course is specifically designed for students who are combining school and parenting. Our goal is to provide information, build skills, and develop support systems that promote the success of student parents. We focus on strategies to enhance academic success and share ways for student parents to develop a healthy balance between your family, your GPA and your sense of self.

TRSP Internships provide an opportunity for students to participate in the creation of a dynamic and supportive community within and across the Transfer, Re-entry, ans Student Parent Center. Interns provide students with information and insights gained from their experience with campus and community services and resources. Specific service-learning projects, working with staff and fellow interns are developed each semester based on center needs and priorities.

Social Welfare 97/197 and Ethnic Studies 97/197: Starting Point Mentorships

The Starting Point Mentorship Program connects UC Berkeley student mentors who are enrolled in this course with community college students. The program is specifically designed to encourage under-served students (older returning students, low income students, first-generation college students, students combining school and parenting, veterans etc.), and welcomes all students to explore their academic potential and prepare themselves for transfer to UC Berkeley. Mentors provide mentees with motivation, information, and access to resources. They also meet regularly throughout the semester to discuss goals, services, opportunities, and resources.

Class sessions are held:
Mondays from 2 - 3 PM OR Tuesdays from 2 - 3 PM in 105 César Chávez

Education 198: Culminating the Cal Experience

This course is designed to foster a culminating experience among adult learners (transfer, re-entry, and veteran students in upper-division courses) to inventory and strengthen the skills cultivated through the Berkeley experience. Working together as a community of scholars, class members develop, assess, and hone strategies to ensure further academic and professional success. Students gain insights and coaching to apply various theoretical and practical models to their own objectives. Issues addressed include coping with the continued academic demands of the university, positioning an effective completion of a degree while maintaining the manifold roles and objectives of a Berkeley student, and developing strategies to further engender professional success. The curriculum integrates a network of campus resources through career and professional counseling, workshops, guest speakers, alumni presentations, and discussion sessions.

Education 198: Peer Leadership and Mentoring in the Classroom

Instructors: Rick Low and Ron Williams

This course prepares students to be co-facilitators for TRSP transition courses. Topics to be covered include: small group dynamics, the "problem-posing" method of instruction, creating an atmosphere of trust and support, and teaching through positive feedback. Students will participate as co-facilitators in on-going TRSP courses concurrent with their tranining.
