Spring 2012 Transition Courses for New Cal Students

Education 198: Transitioning to Cal: An Introduction to the Research University for Transfer Students

This class is designed to help facilitate your transition to Cal by improving your knowledge of the research university and its resources, identifying key academic skills and strategies for upper division coursework and building connections and community. During the semester we will focus on areas that promote academic success such as critical reading, preparing for exams, time management, and academic writing. Students will actively explore campus resources and learn about internships, undergraduate research, study abroad and other enrichment opportunities. Enrollment is limited to 25 students per section.

Education 198: Adult Learners in Higher Education

This course addresses specific issues relevant to re-entry (25 and older) adult learners during the transitional first semester at Cal. Course discussions and assignments are designed to refine study skills such as managing the heavy reading load, refining writing skills to Berkeley standards, and balancing academics with personal and work environments. Due to its adult learning emphasis, this class affords the opportunity to connect with other re-entry learners who deal with concerns that are often different from traditional-age students. In addition to weekly meetings, there are workshops and other opportunities in our TRSP Center to work on skills, to network and build community. Many re-entry students have said that this course was essential to their success at Cal.

Education 98/198: It Takes a Village: Building Learning Communities for Student Parents
Two units Pass/Not Pass

This course content focuses on building a collaborative learning environment for students who are balancing school and parenting. Course content is developed with student input, and includes class presentations, guest speakers, facilitated discussions, creative homework assignments (involving your children!) and hands-on class exercises.

Spring 2012 Courses for Continuing Cal Students

Social Welfare 97/197 and Ethnic Studies 97/197: Starting Point Mentorships

The Starting Point Mentorship Program connects UC Berkeley student mentors who are enrolled in this course with community college students. The program is specifically designed to encourage under-served students (older returning students, low income students, first-generation college students, students combining school and parenting, veterans etc.), and welcomes all students to explore their academic potential and prepare themselves for transfer to UC Berkeley. Mentors provide mentees with motivation, information, and access to resources. They also meet regularly throughout the semester to discuss goals, services, opportunities, and resources.

Education 198: Peer Leadership and Mentoring in the Classroom

This course prepares students to be co-facilitators for TRSP transition courses. Topics to be covered include: small group dynamics, the "problem-posing" method of instruction, creating an atmosphere of trust and support, and teaching through positive feedback. Students will participate as co-facilitators in on-going TRSP courses concurrent with their tranining.

Social Welfare 97/197: Service Learning Internships

TRSP Internships provide an opportunity for students to participate in the creation of a dynamic and supportive community within and across the Transfer, Re-entry, and Student Parent Center. Interns provide students with information and insights gained from their experience with campus and community services and resources. Specific service-learning projects, working with staff and fellow interns are developed each semester based on center needs and priorities.

Education 198: Veterans in Higher Education

This course is designed to acclimate veterans to the opportunities and expectations of student life at UC Berkeley. Learn to maximize benefits and make the best transition to the Cal academic experience. This class affords the opportunity to connect with other new and experienced Cal veterans to gain insights and stretegies for working with issues that are often different from the traditional student experience.

 

Education 198: Culminating the Cal Experience
One unit Pass/Not Pass
Instructor: Ron Williams

This course is designed to foster a culminating experience among adult learners (transfer, re-entry, and veteran students in upper-division courses) to inventory and strengthen the skills cultivated through the Berkeley experience. Students will develop and act on plans for graduate school or finding employment after graduation through a variety of exercises and presentations.

 

Education 98/198: Once Upon a University: An Orientation Course for Student Parents

The goal of this class is to create a supportive learning community in which to master the unique challenges experienced by parents who are new to Cal and/or new to parenting. The course is designed to provide timely information, an understanding of financial aid resources, academic tips and shared strategies for balancing course load expectations with parenting imperatives. Course content is developed with student input, and includes class presentations, guest speakers, facilitated discussions, creative homework assignments (involving your children!) and hands-on class exercises.
